Artist's Comments

My neighbors are hobby farmers, and I am insanely jealous. They have some 11 mini horses, 2 sheep, puppies, kitties, and two tiny chickens--Peter and Pam. Scale is obviously not so apparent in the picture, in fact the picture makes him look downright majestic...but he's a tiny rooster. Seriously, like a half the size of a regular chicken.

I love chickens so, one of my dreams is to have my own little brood of chickens. Eggs are, after all, the perfect food.

So this took me couple of days to finish, mostly because the feathers were irritating to do, but I desperately need the practice on textures like that.

Any critique would be much appreciated! There was a lot of detail to screw up here.

*Edit* Fixed the chicken's chest to be more feathery and completely changed the background .

Materials:
Bristol Smooth Board
Woodless pencils of various softness and a mechanical pencil (something new to me, I'm not sure if the lead was ideal but I needed something to do tiny details. Is there a certain kind of mechanical pencil lead that works best?)
Smudgers and tissues

Part of my series of local creatures, the other ones are:

Yet another great piece and the feathers are fantastic. They really do look soft and feathery.

With regard to a mechanical pencil well I'm no expert as I too have only recently started using one for details in particular. I have read that many people use them in varying degrees of hardness (H's - B's) and also in varying degrees of width (0.3mm, 0.5mm and 0.7mm) to get better or finer details. I've also heard that it really can make a difference when doing hair. Unfortunately for me, it is very difficult to obtain anything other than a standard 0.5mm HB mechanical pencil so I can't really comment on which leads do what or are better for what other than what I've read.

If there's one slight criticism about this piece it would be that the belly of the rooster doesn't give off the fact that it is all feather like the rest of the picture. I know that that part of him may have been in darkness and maybe hard to see in reality but feel that a bit of definition and the occasional 'artistic license' highlight may help define it a little bit.

Other than that it's a fantastic piece and I can't stop looking at those feathers.

Also, do you work very quick when drawing as it seems that you have a new one every couple of days or just have a backlog of drawings to upload?

Oh, I just work pretty fast I guess. I've only been drawing with graphite for a week or so. I also have an ungodly amount of free time, so I can spend all day doing this! I'm really into it right now :D

I'm really glad you think the feathers are a success! I really agonized over them. I agree with you 100% about the belly, I'm going to retouch it this morning.

I just used a regular old .5mm pencil as well, do you you know where on earth you can get leads of different hardness? I usually just see them label by size, I really don't know how hard they are!

Generally speaking, in my own experience mechanical pencils tend to come with standard HB leads in them. Like I said, I have extreme difficulty getting any leads other than HB and occasionally 2B but I assume that's just because where I live isn't exactly a thriving city with endless amounts of art supplies.

I also assume that to get different hardness leads will require a bit of online searching. I do check occasionally but to be honest it's not something I've searched long and hard for.

I'll do a bit of research and get back to you if I find anything out.

i honestly cant see anything wrong with it

I live in a pretty small city too, but there is at least one really decent art supply store. I have to check on it the next time I'm there. I really would love to find a 2B .5 mm to get nice dark detail.

Are you working on any new pencil pieces at the moment?

I've asked around and have found that it is possible to get a 4B mechanical pencil in a range of widths from .3mm - .7mm but as yet I don't know what make or where to get them.

I am currently working or rather attempting my first real portrait using some tips and techniques that I've learnt over the last couple of months. I'll probably upload a WIP tomorrow so I'd love some critique on it when I do.

Can't wait to see what you upload next.
